Lip Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
Aftercare Instructions
Hey there! If you've just had a lip tattoo, I've got some aftercare instructions for you. While your tattoo heals, it might look super vibrant or reddish in colour. If you experience a reaction, please get in touch, but otherwise, try to avoid contacting us during this time.
In the first four hours after your treatment, your tattooed area might weep lymph fluid. No need to worry though, just grab some tissue and gently blot it away. This will help prevent heavy scabbing, which can cause colour loss. Also, for the first 48 hours, drink from a straw and be careful when brushing your teeth.
To help with the healing process, apply the aftercare balm that we've provided as frequently as you'd like. But please, whatever you do, avoid touching the tattooed area with unclean hands, anything dirty, or sleeping with pets. Bacterial infection is the last thing you want!
Until all the scabs fall off, it's important to avoid getting the area wet, applying makeup, receiving facials, taking hot showers (steam), and exposing the area to the sun. Also, don't scratch or pick at the scabs! This can pull out the implanted colour, and we don't want that to happen.
Avoid spicy and salty foods for the first few days, as they can cause discomfort and may irritate the tattooed area. Avoid alcohol and smoking, do not consume alcohol or smoke for at least a week after your lip tattoo.
During the healing process, the inside of your lips will heal first since it's a wet area. The lip line will be more vibrant and take longer to heal. Don't worry though, the true colour of the tattoo won't be revealed until about week 2-3 of the healing process. Scabs should fall off within a week. Attend your follow-up appointment with your tattoo artist to ensure that the healing process is going well and to address any concerns you may have.
If you're prone to cold sores, you may still get one even if you've taken your preventative medication beforehand since it's not 100% effective. But no worries, if you notice a cold sore, you can get some over-the-counter medication to help heal it. Just know that getting a cold sore might cause some colour loss, which can be fixed with a touch-up session. Keep in mind that a lip tattoo can cause trauma, and unfortunately, there's no guarantee on preventing a cold sore outbreak.
Avoid direct sun exposure, smoking, and skincare products with ingredients that may cause fading, like retinol. And don't get any laser treatments on or near the lip area. All of these things may decrease the life of your tattoo. Take care!
